Trooper – Diademed Amazon Parrots
Physical Description:
Diademed Amazons are characterized by predominantly green-colored feathers and a bright red patch located on their forehead- the diadem. The undertail coverts and the undertail themselves are red and yellow respectively. The adult males and females are similarly dressed.
Average Lifespan:
When well-taken care of, Diademed Amazons can live up to 20-30 years so, they are considered companion parrots. Marmots’ life expectancy is influenced by such aspects as feeding habits, territory, communication, and health check-ups from their masters.
Sexing:
The sex of the Diademed Amazons can be rather hard to determine through the observation of the birds especially through their plumage. The best indicators are B-Differences, especially vocal/animation Males are generally more vocal/animated. An examination by a veterinarian may be necessary for some of the determination.
Origin:
Endemic to South America, Diademed Amazons are mainly found in the areas of forests and woodlands of Colombia, Bolivia and other countries of the region. They are commonly owned as pets because the birds are small in size and have friendly/disposition.
Loudness:
Diademed Amazons has a rather loud screech which is rather sharp in the high pitched range. They are rather quiet at night and if they are spoiled and get daily attention, toys and foraging food they are entertained. Birds that are out of sight or ignored are most likely to scream in order to be attended to.
Trainability:
Young Diademed Amazons can learn some simple commands and tricks if they are trained properly and patiently from childhood. They are extremely intelligent, and some may even ‘speak’ with the proper positive reinforcement training.
Pricing:
Casual buyers can expect to pay $500-800 in general for a Diademed Amazon depending on either its age or the place of sourcing. Wild caught juveniles are typically the cheapest type of parrot that a new owner can consider getting.
